Laura Jeffrey Academy is currently engaged in the redesign of our classroom webpages. Our goal is to create pages that are more readily accessible, easily understandable, and more consistent in format and content across subject areas.
Additionally, they are being designed to complement and align with the new Parent Portal thaat we are now piloting and intending to implement fully in the fall.
Until new pages are up, please find the course outlines and learning target for 5th grade LASS by clicking HERE!!!

The website we have been using since November (http://grou.ps/lassclass) will still remain for occasional use by students.

We are very excited about the launch of our new website, http://grou.ps/lassclass. We will be using it almost every day as tool to write, reflect, learn, etc. The features include:
Talks: Where students will have discussions online about various questions we (or they) post.
Thoughts: A place for longer, more formal written pieces by the students.
Class Projects: A Wiki page where we collect and display various class projects.
WITWIGO: A news feed of weekly current events that we will use in class.
Resources: Videos, Photos, a Map, and Links that will help us learn more about whatever topic we are studying.
Events and Due Dates: A calendar of upcoming events
The usual weekly message and calendar that you have seen on this website will also be posted on the website. If you have more questions, you can start here:

The quarter is coming to an end! Last week’s shared inquiry was a great success, we were really impressed with the depths of the girls’ thoughts and how they have improved since our first discussion at the beginning of the year. Using the story we read, Turquoise Horse as a jumping off point, the girls are going through the full writer’s process this week to create poems about important symbols in their lives. No spelling this week. We hope everyone has a wonderful intersession and break and we look forward to starting our Africa unit when we return!
Wow, the quarter is almost to an end! The fall festival was a great success and now it’s time to finish strong. For several reasons, we decided to move the study of Laura Jeffrey (the woman) until later in the year and will instead be spending this week honing our Shared Inquiry skills as we read Turquoise Horse by Gerald Hausman.
Don’t forget that spelling folders are due Wednesday and Independent Reading Goals are due on Monday (Nov 9)!
This week in LASS we will be finishing up our work as geographers. We will interview returning students to see how their school environment impacts their learning at LJA.
We will then begin our study of our namesake Laura Jeffrey. We will look at primary sources to understand why she is a great namesake for our school!
Spelling is due on Wednesday.
Each student set their own independent reading goal last week. Students should be working to achieve their goal this week!
Hello Everyone,
It was wonderful to meet with so many you last week during conferences! We hope the girls enjoyed their week off and will come back ready to work. After working hard to develop good habits in class, the girls are now ready to be a bit more independent. Some exciting things to look for at home:
Today (Monday), everyone should bring home a independent reading goal for you to sign. We worked hard to set really SMART goals (ask your girls if they remember what that stands for) and we trust that you will help your daughter keep track of her goal. They will also have a calendar that they will use to track their goals.
On Thursday, girls should come home with their first set of words from their personal spelling lists to be studied at home–spelling will be due back next Wednesday.
Have a great week!

Wow, is it October already? Last week we had some great discussions about Kaddo’s Wall, the girls really showed that they will be excellent scholars here at LJA. In addition to introducing how we will discuss books, he have been working on being independent readers in silent reading, independent writers in our writers notebooks, and this week will be learning how to be independent spelling-studiers, as we introduce our spelling routine. Look for Personal Spelling Lists coming home starting Tuesday!
A few other highlights from last week and the upcoming week:
–The girls finished there NWEA testing last Thursday!
–We are starting Geography by learning how to read maps and beginning to think about the relationship between people and their environments.
–Writer’s Notebook homework on Wednesday night!
Look forward to seeing everyone at the Open House on Tuesday and Conferences Next Week!
